Lee Terrace
Mailen Design has completed Lee Terrace, a new three-bedroom family home in Blackheath, South East London. Built on a former triple-garage plot within a historic conservation area, the project respects its surroundings while introducing a contemporary architectural approach.
Inspired by mews houses, the design integrates seamlessly into the neighborhood, which includes several Grade II listed Victorian properties. Its stepped façade, made of London stock brick and pre-cast stone, features ornamental brick detailing, while the upper volume is clad in bronze-finished aluminium panels, subtly complementing the historic context.
The ground floor is concealed by an extended garden wall, leading to a small front courtyard paved with large ceramic tiles. Expansive glazing connects the interior to the rear garden, enhancing the sense of openness. The ground floor includes an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, where materials such as exposed concrete, oak joinery, and herringbone parquet flooring create a warm and textured aesthetic. Natural light is maximized through large windows and skylights.
A tiered garden at the rear features built-in seating, patio steps, and a mature poplar tree, providing a private outdoor space uncommon for mews-style homes. The first and second floors house the bedrooms, with the master suite occupying the top level, complete with a walk-in wardrobe and en-suite bathroom.
Sustainability is a key focus, with an air-source heat pump, high insulation levels, and strategic ventilation minimizing energy demands. The project transforms a once-neglected brownfield site into an elegant, energy-efficient home that harmonizes with Blackheath’s conservation area while offering modern family living.
