House of Remembrance of the Augustow Roundup
The historic Dom Turka in Augustów, Poland, has been transformed into the House of Remembrance of the Augustow Roundup, a museum dedicated to one of the darkest chapters in Polish history. Designed by the Polish architectural studio Tremend, the project carefully restores and adapts the early 20th-century building to honor the memory of those who perished in the 1945 Augustow Roundup.
A key challenge was preserving the historical integrity of the building while creating a meaningful and accessible space for reflection. Once the site of Soviet NKVD operations, the structure has been meticulously renovated to retain original architectural details, including traces of former detention cells. Thoughtful modifications allow for modern exhibitions, immersive storytelling, and interactive experiences that deepen the visitor’s understanding of the events.
A significant element of the project is the Augustow Roundup Victims Memorial Wall, inscribed with the names of nearly 600 victims. The surrounding landscape, designed with sculptural steel trees and dedicated green spaces, reinforces the theme of remembrance, allowing visitors to pay personal tributes.
Designed with inclusivity in mind, the museum features accessible pathways, multimedia exhibits adapted for visually impaired visitors, and special accommodations for individuals on the autism spectrum. These elements ensure that the House of Remembrance of the Augustow Roundup is not just a place of historical documentation but a deeply engaging space for all generations.
The transformation of Dom Turka marks a profound shift—from a symbol of suffering to a place of memory and education. This project is not only an act of preservation but a powerful commitment to historical truth and national identity, ensuring that the stories of the past continue to shape the future.
