Between Two Walls
ZDZ Architectes renovated two barns and stables into a house in Conthey, Switzerland. The office describes the project as follows:
The conversion of these two barns and stables into residential accommodation is being carried out in two phases.
The first involves encircling the building in a concrete belt, thus ensuring its statics while preserving the clear appearance of the original stone building.
The second phase focused on creating a new two-storey interior volume with flexible functionalities. Its layout is divided into two clearly defined zones: a slice within the swelling of the stone wall dedicated to bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens, and another more open area designed for daytime activities. The external staircase will enable the home to be divided in the future into two 40 m2 studios. The large patio is cool and sheltered from the road. The northern stable contains a workshop and garage, as well as a large open terrace under the roof structure.
The use of galvanised sheet metal on the façade as a resourced material harmonises with the robustness of the concrete and the smoothness of the wood. This blend of the traditional and the contemporary gives the restoration a unique identity that respects its history.
